Greenock is an administrative centre as well as a town, part of the Inverclyde region in the West of Scotland, just west of Glasgow and a former burgh within the historic county of Renfrewshire. Located in the Lowlands of Scotland, it forms part of a contiguous urban area with Gourock to the west & Port Glasgow to the east.
The UK Census of 2011 showed that Greenock’s population was 44,248, which was a decrease from the 46,861 recorded during the 2001 UK Census. It lies on the south bank of the River Clyde at the “Tail of the Bank” just where the River Clyde opens in to the Firth of Clyde.
