Greenock is a town as well as an administrative centre, part of the Inverclyde council region in the West of Scotland, just west of Glasgow & used to be a former burgh within the historic county of Renfrewshire. Located in the Lowlands of Scotland, it forms part of a continuous urban area with Gourock to the west & Port Glasgow to the east.
The 2011 UK Census indicated that Greenock had a civil population of 44,248, which was lower than the 46,861 returned during the 2001 UK Census. It is situated on the south bank of the Clyde at the “Tail of the Bank” where the Clyde opens into the Firth of Clyde.
