Your Consultation Before Treatment

Every new client has a short conversation with their therapist before the first treatment starts. It takes a few minutes, it happens in the room, and it is not charged for — it is simply how a session gets adapted to you instead of delivered from a script.

Book Your First Session

We are massage therapists, not clinicians. We do not diagnose and we do not treat medical conditions. Nothing on this page or said in a consultation is a substitute for advice from your GP or another registered healthcare professional. What a consultation establishes is whether massage is appropriate for you right now — and, if it is, how it should be adapted.

What We Ask, and Why

Four things, none of which take long. You are never obliged to answer — but anything left out is something your therapist cannot work around.

  • Your general health

Any ongoing conditions, and any medication you take. Not because we treat those things — we do not — but because some of them change which treatments are appropriate and how firmly we should work.

  • Recent injury or surgery

What happened, when, and whether you have been signed off by whoever treated you. Recent surgery is one of the most common reasons a treatment gets modified or postponed.

  • Where it hurts, and how

A dull ache, a sharp catch on movement, pins and needles — these point in different directions. It also tells us which areas to leave alone.

  • What you want from the session

Relief from something specific, or an hour to switch off entirely. Both are legitimate and they lead to very different sessions.

Before a first treatment you will also be asked to complete a short written health questionnaire. It covers the same ground in a form your therapist can refer back to at later visits, and it is sent to you as part of booking — there is nothing to fill in before you arrive on this page.

When We Would Suggest Waiting

Massage is not always the right thing on the day. If any of these apply we will say so and explain why, rather than treat you anyway and hope for the best.

  • A fever, or any active infection
  • Recent surgery not yet signed off by the person who performed it
  • A skin condition, rash or open wound in the area to be treated
  • Certain circulatory conditions, including where sensation is reduced
  • The first twelve weeks of pregnancy — after that, treatment is adapted rather than declined

None of these is permanent, and none of them means massage is off the table for good — most simply mean a different week, or a different treatment. If you are working around something ongoing, our common problems pages describe what people typically come in with and which treatments tend to suit each, and you are welcome to call us to talk it through before you book anything.

Frequently Asked Questions

It is a short conversation before your first treatment — a few minutes, in the treatment room, not a separate appointment or a separate charge. Your therapist asks about your general health, anything you are currently being treated for, and what you want from the session. It is how the treatment gets adapted to you rather than delivered from a script, and yes, every new client has one.

Broadly: any medical conditions or medication, recent surgery or injury, whether you are pregnant, areas that are painful or sensitive, and what you are hoping the session will help with. You are never obliged to give a reason for declining to answer something — but anything you leave out is something the therapist cannot work around.

No. We are massage therapists, not clinicians. We do not diagnose, we do not treat medical conditions, and nothing said in a consultation is a substitute for advice from your GP or another registered healthcare professional. What the consultation establishes is whether massage is appropriate for you right now, and how it should be adapted if so.

There are circumstances where a treatment should be postponed or modified — among them fever or an active infection, recent surgery, some skin conditions in the area to be worked on, and certain circulatory conditions. Pregnancy does not rule massage out but does change how it is done. If something in your answers means we should not treat you today, we will say so and explain why rather than proceed.

We will recommend which of our treatments best suits what you have described, and say honestly when massage is unlikely to be the right answer for what you are dealing with. If you would rather start from the problem, our common problems pages set out what people typically come in with and which treatments tend to suit each one.

Yes. Your therapist will ask how you responded to the last treatment and adjust pressure, focus and duration accordingly — that feedback is more useful than the first consultation, because it is based on how your body actually reacted rather than on what either of us predicted.
